Germany's Kerber into Italian Open last 16

Former world number one Angelique Kerber reached the last 16 of the Italian Open thanks to a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) win against Aliaksandra Sasnovich in Rome on Saturday.

Kerber seamlessly followed on from strong performances in the first round against American Lauren Davis (6-1, 6-0) and in the second round against Veronika Kudermetova (6-3, 6-0).

The German will now face top favourite Iga Swiatek, who won 6-3, 6-4 against Yulia Putintseva.

Kerber made her return to the tour this year after a 18-month maternity leave.

Recently, she didn't make it past the first round in Miami and Stuttgart. She then decided to take a short break to recover from a cold and "prepare properly for the clay court matches."
