EU to station firefighters from 12 nations at wildfire hotspots

The EU plans to station more than 500 firefighters from 12 countries at important locations in Europe this summer to try to combat wildfires.

They will support local fire brigades in France, Greece, Portugal and Spain among other nations, the EU Commission announced in Brussels on Tuesday.

"This proactive measure strengthens Europe's readiness to fight forest fires and mitigate their devastating impact on lives, homes and the environment," it said.

The EU made similar plans for last year's forest fire season - albeit on a smaller scale.

In order to be better equipped to fight wildfires, the EU is now relying on a special fleet of fire-fighting aircraft.

This consists of 28 aircraft and four helicopters stationed in 10 member states.

Last year, over half a million hectares were destroyed by forest fires in the EU as climate change set temperatures soaring.

In terms of the area burnt, this makes 2023 one of the worst years for forest fires in the EU, according to a report by the EU Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC).
