Leeds dodged transfer error by not signing £6.5m ace in January, has played just 67 minutes on loan - opinion

Leeds United are just a month away from the summer transfer window opening once again.

However, between now and then, Leeds have plenty of work still to do in order to determine the division in which they will be playing in next season.

The Whites face the second leg of their Championship semi-final with Norwich City on Thursday and know a win would take them to within 90 minutes of a return to the Premier League.

If Leeds were to gain promotion, a considerably more exciting summer would be ahead as they look to build a squad capable of actually retaining the club’s top-flight status.

Defeat against the Canaries, or even at Wembley would consign Leeds to a second consecutive season of Championship football, which the 49ers have already acknowledged would result in key sales.

These would be necessary in order to comply with PSR rules and offset some of that £190 million owed in unpaid transfer instalments, which may be a reason why Leeds were so quiet in January.

Leeds dodged huge transfer bullet with Calvin Ramsay

The only position Leeds were looking to strengthen in the winter window was at right-back, which they eventually managed to do so in the final hour of deadline day.

After numerous links to several different players, Connor Roberts was the one who eventually arrived on loan from Burnley. Ben Johnson, Neco Williams and Ben Godfrey were just some of the reported targets.

There were others, too, and Leeds will certainly be feeling as though they dodged a bullet on one of those in Liverpool defender Calvin Ramsay.

Leeds were linked with Ramsay all the way back in 2022 when he was still at Aberdeen, though the Scotsman opted for a £6.5 million move to Anfield instead.

After an injury hit first season, it was then more of the season out on loan in the first half of this campaign at Preston North End, which prompted Liverpool to recall him.

Leeds were among the sides keen to take him in January but he ended up joining League One play-off finalists Bolton Wanderers, where he has endured another nightmare spell.

Ramsay has not kicked a ball since mid-February, having played just 67 minutes of football. He’s been in the squad on just two occasions in the last 16 matches, with no word of an injury.

Those statistics alone are pretty telling that he would not have been good enough for Leeds. Given his age and inexperience, he also won’t have added much to the dressing room.

Roberts was the right man for Leeds

Roberts may have only started two Championship matches for Leeds since his arrival, but he was definitely the right man to replace Luke Ayling and Djed Spence.

According to Joe Rodon, Roberts immediately became a big part of the dressing room at Leeds and much of that will be down to how much experience he has.

Having said that, he has also managed to have an impact on the pitch, too. He scored the crucial equalising goal against Leicester City, while also providing the assist that earned a point at Huddersfield Town.

A young player such as Ramsay simply would not have been able to offer what Roberts has.
