All eyes on Tuesday night were on the debut of former Iowa superstar Caitlin Clark, meanwhile experienced veteran DeWanna Bonner quietly made a little piece of WNBA history.
The Connecticut Sun forward and former Auburn star hit a bucket during the third quarter of the contest that moved her into fifth place on the WNBA career scoring list.
She passed Candice Dupree.
Dupree played in the WNBA for 16 years, a former first-round pick who tallied a career 6,895 points. Bonner has played in the WNBA for 14 seasons, so she broke Dupree’s mark in considerably less time.
Each of the three players currently in front of Bonner on the list are catchable, too. Tina Thompson is in second with 7,488 points, Tamika Catchings is in third with 7,380 points and Tina Charles is the next up at 7,115 points.
Diana Taurasi‘s career mark of 10,108 points is a long way away.
In any case, DeWanna Bonner was having a nice night as the Sun controlled the game against Clark’s Indiana Fever. At the time of this writing Bonner had 20 points on 8-of-14 shooting.
Caitlin Clark gets off to slow start
Things didn’t get off to a rip-roaring start for Clark in her official WNBA debut. Two early fouls in the first quarter caused her to sit for quite a bit as the Fever fended off the Sun without her.
Clark finally got rolling midway through the second half when she scored her first career points on a driving layup to the rim.
Then she began to find her shooting stroke after receiving some halftime encouragement from teammate Aliyah Boston. Clark had knocked home four 3-point attempts and had 20 points in the game at the time of this writing.
That was very close to the 21.5-point over/under Las Vegas had set for her debut, something that will assuredly have some bettors nervous.
During her four seasons with the Iowa Hawkeyes, Clark averaged 28.4 points per game, which peaked during her senior season with 31.6 ppg. Thanks to her sharpshooting, she became the collegiate men’s and women’s all-time leading scorer in her 130th career game.
