£10m ace Leeds eyed January deal for has just one year left on contract, 49ers should move again - opinion

Leeds United look set for another busy summer transfer window irrespective of how their play-off campaign pans out.

There is less than a month until the window opens again, though Leeds still have plenty of work left to do on the pitch before Daniel Farke can even start thinking about that.

Leeds play the second leg of their Championship play-off semi-final against Norwich City tomorrow with the tie very much still in the balance after a 0-0 draw at Carrow Road on Sunday.

With home advantage behind them, the Whites know a win would send them to within 90 minutes of an immediate return to the Premier League.

A victorious play-off campaign for the first time in the club’s history would lead to a very exciting window as Leeds look to build a squad capable of sustaining their top-flight status.

However, 49ers Enterprises know key sales would have to be made if they don’t win the play-offs in order to comply with the EFL’s PSR rules.

Leeds could land summer Ben Davies bargain after January interest

As mentioned, the summer is likely to be considerably busier for Leeds than the most recent January window, where Connor Roberts was the one and only signing.

Strengthening at right-back was very much Leeds’ priority after the turn of the New Year but they did take a look at other positions including left-back, centre-back and right-winger.

There were certainly some ambitious names on Leeds’ wish list with Tottenham Hotspur’s Ben Davies perhaps the most of all considering how involved he has been under Ange Postecoglou this season.

Unsurprisingly, a deal never materialised for £10m man Davies but that should not stop Leeds from having another look this summer, as he will have just a year left on his contract.

Postecoglou has already confirmed there will be big changes to his Spurs squad over the coming months and if that is to happen, it could open the door for a Davies exit.

Leeds’ chances of signing Davies would, of course, be strengthened if they win promotion, but dropping down to the Championship alongside some of his Welsh counterparts shouldn’t be ruled out.

Not only would Davies bring some necessary experience to Leeds’ squad, but he is also highly capable of playing both in central defence, and at left-back.

With Liam Cooper set to depart, Leeds will not have any natural cover for the injured Pascal Struijk. Junior Firpo, meanwhile, is Farke’s only natural left-back, and also has just 12 months on his deal. All these factors make a deal a no brainer.

Firpo could leave this summer, would heighten Leeds’ left-back needs

Firpo has undoubtedly enjoyed his best season in a Leeds shirt since joining from Barcelona three years ago, but this summer could bring his time at Elland Road to an end.

Phil Hay reported back in March Firpo is unlikely to be offered a new deal and with his contract expiring in 2025, this would be Leeds’ last chance to get a fee for him.

That would only heighten Leeds’ need for two new left-backs to come in this summer and Davies versatility and experience means he is someone who fits the bill.
