3 players who Danny Rohl could realistically reunite with at Sheffield Wednesday this summer - opinion

Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl will have to oversee a really positive summer transfer window if he wants his Owls side to be competitive next season.

Sheffield Wednesday currently have a number of players out of contract this summer, and seemingly very little resources to rebuild the team.

It may be that the Owls are forced to rely on free agent and loan signings once again. Though Rohl may well be looking towards some of his contacts in the game in a bid to bring new names to Hillsborough.

Rohl has the likes of Southampton, Red Bull Leipzig, and Bayern Munich on his club coaching CV and after doing so well with Wednesday, certain names may be keen on reuniting with the impressive German coach this summer.

Here we look at three players who are out of contract this summer and who Rohl could potentially reunite with…

Alex McCarthy

Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy is out of contract this summer, and already being lined up for a summer move.

He’s eyed by several Premier League teams including giants Liverpool and Newcastle United, as well as Celtic, though whether or not the one-time England goalkeeper would fancy seeing out his career as a no.2 remains to be seen.

McCarthy, 34, has returned to the staring XI with Southampton in recent weeks, playing in the last six games and keeping two clean sheets.

Sheffield Wednesday are in need of a new goalkeeper this summer with James Beadle’s loan finishing, albeit with Wednesday wanting him back, and Cameron Dawson leaving.

Rohl reuniting with McCarthy, whilst ambitious, could be very shrewd for the Owls, and it could be a very exciting move for McCarthy.

Oliver Burke

Rohl and Oliver Burke worked together at Red Bull Leipzig, albeit briefly with the pair moving onto new clubs soon after they arrived in 2016.

Burke has just spent the season on loan with Birmingham City where he received mixed reviews after featuring 21 times in the Championship without scoring or assistsing.

He’ll no doubt leave parent club Werder Bremen again this summer, either on loan or permanently, and he could be yet another player who finds form under Rohl.

Burke, formerly of Sheffield United, has shone in the Championship with the likes of West Brom and Millwall before, also being a very versatile player who can play on either flank or even as a wing-back.

Burke still seems like a diamond in the rough despite a tough spell with Birmingham City, and Rohl could be the man to rediscover his form.

Stuart Armstrong

50-cap Scotland international Stuart Armstrong is another one at Southampton who as of now is set to become a free agent in the summer.

The 32-year-old has shone for the Saints this season, scoring five goals and assisting seven more from midfielder, in 42 total league appearances.

Sheffield Wednesday desperately need extra bodies in midfield with the likes of Barry Bannan and Will Vaulks currently out of contract in the summer, and Rohl could also do with a goal-scoring one too.

The Owls need more creativity across the pitch having scored just 44 goals in the Championship this season, and Armstrong would bring just that; per Sofascore, Armstrong averages 1.5 shots per game and 1.6 key passes, showcasing his effectiveness in the final third.

Expect Southampton to fancy a new deal for Armstrong if they don’t earn promotion. But if they do, then Armstrong could be one who’s moved on ahead of a busy summer readying for the Premier League.
