'Had to slow down': O’Neil shares whether Wolves star Pedro Neto will be fit to feature v Liverpool

Gary O’Neil provided an update on whether Wolves could see Pedro Neto involved in the last game of the season against Liverpool on Sunday.

Sunday marks the end of the 2023/24 Premier League season, as Wolves aim to bow out in style against Liverpool at Anfield.

The Old Gold have the opportunity to cause an upset in Jurgen Klopp’s final game in charge of the Reds and more importantly, end their season on a high note to break the current run of abysmal form.

For the most part, Gary O’Neil’s side has conducted an impressive campaign in the top flight however, a recent dip in performance level sees the Midlands club with just one win in their previous nine Premier League games.

A lot of Wolves’ decline is attributable to the influx of injuries plaguing O’Neil’s already-shortened squad, with the front line in particular suffering.

That being said, the manager touched upon the potential of one of the Old Gold’s best players featuring in the final game of the season, as Pedro Neto waits to hear of his fate ahead of the trip to Anfield.

Gary O’Neil says Pedro Neto could feature against Liverpool from the bench

Neto has been out of action for Wolves since the start of March after picking up a hamstring injury against Fulham.

The Portuguese winger has missed 20 games so far this season as a result of injury, with there now some hope that the 24-year-old can end the campaign with an appearance against Liverpool.

As relayed by Express and Star, O’Neil gave an encouraging update on Neto however, confirmed that he is unlikely to start at Anfield.

“It will probably be a stretch for him to start at Liverpool, the injury was meant to be between 10 and 12 weeks and he’s about nine now.

“Although he was ahead of schedule, we’ve had to slow down a little bit, but hopefully he’ll be around it and fit enough to be on the bench.”

Wolves fans will want to see Pedro Neto feature against Liverpool amid transfer speculation

It’s been another season plagued by injury for Neto, who hasn’t completed more than 20 Premier League apperances in a single campaign since 2020/21.

While O’Neil will be cautious of welcoming the winger back into action too soon, there will be some hope that the Portugal international will feature in the Old Gold on Sunday, in what could be his last appearance for the club.

Throughout this season, Neto has been the subject of transfer speculation, particularly earlier this year following his fiery start to the 2023/24 calendar, where he recorded eight goal contributions in his opening 10 league games.

It will be an interesting summer regarding the 24-year-old’s future, as Wolves have a decision to make on whether to cash in on their prized talent or hold onto him at risk of his value decreasing if another injury-ridden season plays out next year.

The current focus will be on the possibility of seeing Neto in action on Sunday at Anfield, as whether the winger stays or departs this summer, his efforts this campaign deserve to be celebrated on the final day.
