Berlin: Georgia 'moving away' from joining EU with new law

The German government has described Georgi's adoption of the controversial law restricting foreign influence on civil society as wrong and expressed hope that the government in Tbilisi will reverse its position.

"We remind the Georgian government of its pledge from 2023 to withdraw such a law unconditionally," said deputy government spokesman Wolfgang Büchner in Berlin on Wednesday.

"We share the concern that the Georgian government is moving away from its course towards membership of the European Union with this law."

Georgia has had the status of a candidate country for EU membership since the end of last year. Despite weeks of mass protests, the governing majority of the Georgian Dream party approved the controversial law on Tuesday, which requires foreign-funded organizations to register as "foreign agents."

Spokesman Büchner emphasized that the German government continues to support Georgia on its path to joining the European Union. "We still consider this path to be open. However, it is tied to very clear requirements that every candidate must fulfil. And there will be no discounts on this path."

It is up to Georgia to take this path, but it requires clear reforms and respect for common values, he said.
