‘Mad’: Jurgen Klopp says he still can’t get over ‘crazy’ Man City moment from 2022

Jurgen Klopp has said that he still can’t believe one thing that happened at Manchester City back in 2022.

The Liverpool manager will be taking on his final game at the Merseyside club this Sunday after announcing that this will be his final season at Anfield back in January.

Ahead of his imminent exit from the Premier League, the German has been reflecting on his time at Liverpool, specifically on what trophies his side didn’t end up winning during his reign, with a couple of City incidents getting mentioned.

Speaking in a recent interview with The Anfield Wrap, Klopp had this to say about some of the trophies his side have missed out on during his reign at Liverpool.

He said: “You pick yourself up and go again after not winning the league from a goal from Vinnie Kompany or a not-given handball from Rodri. It was a crazy situation that handball.

“I don’t know where we played, but we were on the bus already and the game was on the telly. We watched it and the whole bus shouted ‘Handball! Wait, he’s not getting it?’

“You can’t change it, but not getting there and then having three weeks to prepare for a Champions League final, these few years were mad.”

Klopp still fuming over Rodri handball incident

Back in February 2022, when City were battling Liverpool for the Premier League title, they managed to beat Everton 1-0 at Goodison Park.

During that game, the home side were denied a penalty after Rodri appeared to have handled the ball in the City penalty area with the top of his arm.

After the game, Everton received an apology from the head of the professional referees body Mike Riley for not getting the penalty.

With City then going on to win the title with a dramatic 3-2 victory over Aston Villa on the final day of the 2021/22 season, it’s easy to see why Klopp still has a bee in his bonnet over this penalty incident.

In our view, regardless of previous refereeing mistakes, the fact that Klopp only won one Premier League title in his nine years at Liverpool and watched City win five under Pep Guardiola says to us that he should be more focused on his own side’s misgivings during this period rather that City.
