How Tottenham Hotspur officials feel about Ange Postecoglou’s first season

Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou has made his frustration abundantly clear following the 2-0 defeat to Manchester City.

Tottenham fans went into this game with a real divide.

Some kept the mentality of wanting their own team to win, even if beating City would have almost handed bitter rivals Arsenal the Premier League title.

Others were genuinely hoping to see Tottenham lose, ensuring that Arsenal end the season empty-handed once again.

Tottenham actually turned in a decent performance and caused City real problems, but Pep Guardiola’s men ran out 2-0 winners.

Some Tottenham fans even celebrated those City goals, showing just how deep the Arsenal hatred runs.

Postecoglou isn’t exactly happy with that thought process and has made his views abundantly clear in a strongly-worded message.

How Tottenham feel about Ange Postecoglou

Postecoglou’s anger has left some wondering whether the Australian is now unhappy at Tottenham.

We saw Antonio Conte have a real meltdown last season and it wasn’t long before he ended up departing the club.

Postecoglou’s message wasn’t quite as harsh but it’s clear that the mentality around the club disappointed him in a similar way.

The Telegraph now report that the belief is Postecoglou remains happy at Tottenham and it was just a case of his frustration boiling over.

It’s added that key decision-makers inside Tottenham were hoping for a top-four finish but do still believe that Postecoglou has made progress this season.

The report claims that Tottenham officials are fully confident that Postecoglou’s approach will pay off in the long run.

Tottenham have taken a step forward from last season but there is still clearly work to be done.

Spurs fan mentality may have been overblown

We can appreciate that Postecoglou wants to win every game; he has come from Celtic, where coming second means you might as well have come last.

Postecoglou wants to bring that mentality to Tottenham and seeing fans almost wanting Spurs to lose will have been alarming for him.

There has almost been a picture painted that Tottenham supporters are the only fanbase that could have possibly felt that way in the situation.

Football fans can be almost a little bitter and twisted though; enjoying the pain of your rivals is sometimes as enjoyable as your own success.

That can be a strange mentality at times but if the shoe was on the other foot, Arsenal fans probably would have felt the exact same way.

This situation is one which may simply never happen again and had Tottenham been level on points with Aston Villa heading into Tuesday’s game, Spurs fans almost certainly would have wanted to win.

Tottenham’s push for the top four seeming fruitless meant some Spurs fans just didn’t see losing on Tuesday as being all that deep.

Postecoglou will want to change that mentality moving forward but Tottenham supporters have backed the Australian this season – including when he crashed out of the Carabao Cup having played a weakened side.

Tottenham fans don’t need to feel like another manager isn’t on their side and going into the summer on this kind of note won’t do anybody any favours.

Let’s just hope that Spurs end the season on a winning note this Sunday against Sheffield United, bringing some positivity back after a divisive few days.
