Xavi calls for 'stability' and outlines financial difficulties Barcelona will now face

Barcelona could be set for a difficult summer transfer window, with several areas of the squad in need of strengthening but a limited budget for signings.

Xavi’s side endured a tough season, after a disappointing campaign in La Liga and the Champions League, but the Spaniard has now reversed his previous decision to depart Barcelona.

The former midfielder will be in charge for next season, but he will need reinforcements in his squad. Guido Rodriguez now looks set to join on a free transfer from Real Betis, but another midfielder will also be needed, as well as an attacker depending on outgoings.

Xavi has now explained why Barcelona may not have the capacity to do major deals this summer, and has reiterated his desire for stability at the club.

Xavi bemoans Barcelona financial situation ahead of summer transfer window

Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of Barcelona’s clash with Almeria, Xavi admitted that there will not be much capacity for a big window.

“The Cule must understand that the situation is very complicated to compete economically. It has nothing to do with what we had 25 years ago when the coach would come and say ‘I want this one, this one, and this one’. It doesn’t work like that anymore,” he stated.

“I understand that and that’s how we’re going to adjust to it. That doesn’t mean we’re not going to compete. We need stability and time. There are good things to compete for.

“The situation we are in is the situation we are in in terms of results. Last year we were solvent without playing the football we would like to play and this year, we have played better, but with worse results.”

Next season could be particularly tough in La Liga, as the expected arrival of Kylian Mbappe at Real Madrid will make them favourites for the title, but Xavi has also stated his desire to bring Barcelona back to the top.

“We are living the situation that the club has at an economic level to compete. We need to compete better. The season has slipped away from us because of details,” he stated.

Barcelona will have to be creative in the market to bring in new players, and with Xavi’s future still unclear, this may be easier said than done.
