Data shows Jean-Philippe Mateta is now the Premier League's best forward at doing one thing

Jean-Philippe Mateta has been a revelation for Crystal Palace in recent months, now he’s been listed as the best striker in the league.

It’s been a wildly successful six-game stretch for Crystal Palace which has witnessed five wins and a draw while several players have proven their star quality.

Jean-Philippe Mateta has shown his quality and proved a lot of people wrong as he continues to find the back of the net and becomes more popular by the week among fans.

Mateta now has 13 goals and four assists in the league this season with 10 of these goals coming since Oliver Glasner arrived.

Now, data has shown him to be the league’s best forward at doing one thing.

Jean-Philippe Mateta is the most clinical forward in the league

Despite emerging as one of the best goalscorers in the league, Mateta isn’t exactly getting countless chances and has had to be incredibly clinical when he’s got an opportunity.

This has seen Mateta score his 13 from just 43 shots and an expected goals tally of just 9.37, which means he’s overperforming by 3.63 as per FotMob.

This also means that he converts 30.2% of his shots into goals, which is a league-leading percentage among other attackers in the league, as per WhoScored.

This is only a positive sign for the Frenchman, as it suggests that as Palace develop and improves, he’ll only get more goals and more chances.

This makes it nonsense the consider he should be sold this summer, despite Napoli now circling with interest.

Crystal Palace must sign Mateta to a long-term contract

Before Glasner arrived at Crystal Palace, Mateta’s future at the club was unclear as he’d never managed to catch alight in a Palace shirt.

But over the past few months, he’s been unstoppable and has proven the £9m fee Palace spent on him to be a bargain.

As clubs will undoubtedly be keen this summer, with Napoli already linked, Palace must follow through on talks over a new contract with Mateta.

Mateta is the best striker Palace could hope for right now, and selling him for the reported £26m only to buy an Eddie Nketiah for £40m makes no sense.
