Report: English clubs on scouting mission of Sheffield Wednesday target who played on Thursday

Two unnamed English clubs watched over this Sheffield Wednesday transfer target on Thursday.

Sheffield Wednesday have a few names on their transfer radar ahead of the summer, but it looks like other clubs fancy them as well.

Ian Poveda is one; the Owls want to re-sign the Leeds United man this summer, with his Elland Road contract set to expire.

But reports earlier in May revealed that Burnley, Luton Town, and Sunderland also like the Colombian winger, who featured 10 times on loan at Sheffield Wednesday in the second half of the 2023/24 season.

Elsewhere, Sheffield Wednesday also want to re-sign striker Ike Ugbo, but the Owls have been urged to act fast with Troyes likely wanting a quick-sale of the Frenchman given their league predicament.

And another name on the Owls’ radar is Duncan McGuire; he missed out on a deadline day move to Hillsborough, though Sheffield Wednesday are said to have kept tabs on the USMNT forward.

Duncan McGuire to Sheffield Wednesday latest

McGuire was close to joining Sheffield Wednesday on deadline day in February. Blackburn Rovers won the race, but McGuire would soon return to Orlando City owing to a paperwork error from Rovers.

He’s out of contract at the end of this year. Orlando have offered him a fresh deal but it looks like he could be on the move this summer with clubs in Europe taking note.

It’s said that McGuire has offers from Belgium and Europe. But it’s now been relayed by Lancashire Telegraph that ‘two unnamed English clubs’ watched the 23-year-old in action against Inter Miami on Thursday morning.

Orlando hosted an Inter Miami side boasting Luis Suarez and Sergio Busquets in their starting XI, drawing the game 0-0 in what was a 00:30am kick-off in GMT.

McGuire has scored five goals in 11 MLS outings so far this season. And he recently discussed the possibility of a summer move to Blackburn Rovers with the Lancashire club still monitoring his situation.

McGuire said: “It’s tough to say. That was a pretty bad mistake, a pretty bad mistake by them [Blackburn]. I’d be open to maybe having a conversation but it would have to be a lot to get me to go back there.”

Were Sheffield Wednesday scouting Duncan McGuire

‘Unnamed clubs’ means it’s impossible to say whether or not Sheffield Wednesday were in attendance, though given their ongoing interest in the player, it certainly seems probable.

The Owls hired Kevin Beadell as head of recruitment at the end of last year, and he later suggested that the MLS would be a league in which Wednesday would look to source new talents.

So that would suggest Sheffield Wednesday’s initial interest in McGuire, with the Owls possibly having a look at other players if they do have scouts in the States right now.

It may be that Wednesday and Blackburn were the two teams in attendance. But with interest coming from across Europe, and with McGuire in fine form, there may well be top-end Championship clubs or even Premier League teams taking an interest.

It remains an expensive potential signing but a very exciting one nonetheless. McGuire may well view Wednesday’s heroics in the 2023/24 season and want in, especially so if Rohl stays.

But for the time being, McGuire to Sheffield Wednesday remains speculative, if not unlikely.
