Gary O'Neil may have Wolves' next Romain Saiss on his hands for 2024/25 in £4.5m gem - opinion

Wolves fans are excited to see what the squad will look like ahead of the 2024/25 season – and it’s possible Gary O’Neil could have a new Romain Saiss on his hands.

Wanderers have their final Premier League game on Sunday against Liverpool and the Molineux faithful are hoping to see their side spoil Jurgen Klopp’s farewell party.

Wolves have rather limped to the finish line in recent weeks, with results having been really poor amid injuries to key players.

Wolves’ small squad has really been feeling the pinch, and there is just a sense of getting to the end now, with European football no longer a possibility.

Going into Sunday’s game, Wolves could still finish as high as 10th, but they need to beat Liverpool to stand a chance. Other results then need to go their way.

Then, attention can turn to the summer, which is when a number of players will be coming back from their loan spells – and one youngster might just be another Romain Saiss for Wolves next term…

Romain Saiss left Wolves in the summer of 2022 after he and the club could not reach an agreement over an extension.

After leaving, Saiss claimed Wolves did make him an offer, but suggested it was a disrespectful one.

He then joined Besiktas where he spent just one season, before moving to Qatari side Al-Sadd. But he made just three appearances for them, before joining Al-Shabab on loan.

A lot of Wolves fans adored Saiss when he was at Molineux. He was never a technically gifted centre-back and did have his limitations. But he always gave absolutely everything on the pitch, and was a leader and a warrior.

One of the more underrated parts of Saiss’ game was his goalscoring ability. In 206 games for the club, he scored 15 goals and since he left, Wolves just haven’t really had any kind of attacking threats from centre-halves.

Max Kilman has scored only ever scored three for the club, while Craig Dawson has two and Toti Gomes has three. Santi Bueno has yet to open his account after 17 appearances.

But Wolves have a centre-back returning to the club from his loan spell this summer in Yerson Mosquera, who has certainly established himself as a goal threat in recent times.

The Colombia international scored his third goal for Villarreal against Sevilla last weekend in just 16 appearances. And previously at FC Cincinnati, he bagged three in 35.

Yerson Mosquera could be ready for Wolves

So that’s six goals across his two loan spells for Mosquera, which is impressive going for a young centre-back.

Clearly, he is a goal threat and that is really good to see. Because Wolves just haven’t had that since Saiss left Molineux. And the comparisons don’t end there – Saiss used to be quite aggressive in the way he defended and Mosquera certainly has that South American steel about him.

While the player has opened the door to a permanent move to Villarreal, O’Neil is keen to take a look at him in pre-season for Wolves.

Possibly, the manager could look to reintegrate the £4.5 million gem, and it would definitely be exciting to see him in the Premier League after his two loan spells away.
