'Wonderful': Mikel Arteta says something will happen for the first time ever at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday

Mikel Arteta says something will happen at the Emirates Stadium this Sunday for ‘the first time’ since it was built.

The Gunners are underdogs in the Premier League title race heading into their final-day clash against Everton.

But, Arteta remains optimistic, as their title rivals Manchester City play host to West Ham United at the Etihad.

If City fail to beat The Hammers, in David Moyes’ final game in charge, a win would seal the league for Arsenal – their first in 20 years.

Speaking ahead of the weekend, Arteta noted that something historic will happen at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, regardless of the final score.

The Premier League title will be at the Emirates Stadium for the first time

Speaking to Spanish outlet AS, Arteta noted that for the first time since the Emirates Stadium was built, the Premier League title will be at the ground ready for Arsenal to lift if they pip City to it.

“Last night also has a beautiful part, and that is to live the title in that way and to be until the last day, against the team we are facing and the history they have, fighting for it,” the Spaniard said.

“It’s going to be a wonderful day on Sunday. It’s the first time since the Emirates Stadium was built that the Premier League will be there waiting for us, with red ribbons.

Mikel Arteta remains laser-focused

Arteta remained laser-focused on his message and insisted his side can’t be focused on City, they must do their own job.

“If we win and they don’t win, it’s for us. That’s nice and it’s something to live for. There is always hope.

“If this has taught me anything, which I’ve lived through several times, it’s that first you have to do what you have to do, which is already a job, and from then on we’ll see what happens.”

It appears he made reference to last season, as towards the end it seemed they were so wrapped up with what Man City were doing, they lost form themselves.

Evidently, lessons have been learned and Arsenal still have every chance of winning the title.
