'No doubt': Eddie Howe now admits £28m Newcastle United player has been frustrated

It is not easy to play for Eddie Howe, with multiple Newcastle United players taking time to adapt.

It is rare that Eddie Howe’s signings hit the ground running. Even Bruno Guimaraes had a spell on the bench before blossoming into the club’s talisman and one the Premier League’s best midfielders.

This season we have seen Anthony Gordon truly grasp what it takes to be successful at Newcastle United under Eddie Howe. He endured a slow start after his move from Everton, but his hard work has led to him becoming the Magpies’ player of the season and someone who could even start for England at the Euros this summer.

Learning what Howe wants takes time, meaning it is unfair to write off a player that is still in the infancy of their Toon career.

Tough start at Newcastle United for Lewis Hall

And that brings us to Lewis Hall, who is finally finding his feet at St James’ Park. He knows more than most how difficult it is to play for Howe, having endured a tough first year on Tyneside.

A lot has been said about Hall’s move to Newcastle, with many questioning if it was the correct decision. Some argued that he was not good enough, which is why he was not playing much earlier in the season.

It was a frustrating start to his loan move from Chelsea, but now Hall looks comfortable.

That has delighted Eddie Howe, who has spoke about Hall’s progress during his pre-match press conference.

“I think for any player when you come to a new club, it’s natural there’s going to be a settling in period,” he said.

“He’s done really well to commit and continue to commit and have consistency in his work, even when no doubt he was frustrated that things weren’t happening quicker than he’d wanted.

“He did really well at Old Trafford and showed a lot of maturity. I’m delighted with where his game is at.”

Hall is now trusted to play for Newcastle United

At the start of the season, Hall could not get a look in. There were suggestions that Howe did not trust the 19-year-old defensively, and that was reflected by his lack of minutes.

The teenager is one of few Toon players that has been fit all season, yet a lot of his time has been spent on the bench. Hall has been an unused substitute 24 times, and was often ignored even during the darkest stages of the club’s injury crisis.

But Hall has turned a corner, and is now a regular starter. He has been involved in Newcastle’s last nine Premier League games, starting six of them. And he will probably start again when the Magpies face Brentford on the final day of the season.

It was a frustrating start, but now things look much brighter for Hall. He has shown signs of improvement, proving that he really is a player who can be important for Newcastle United in the coming years.
