Report: How Liverpool really feel about Wolves trying to scrap VAR ahead of next season

Liverpool have had their fair share of terrible VAR decisions over the course of the past few years.

The Reds have arguably had the absolute king of all of the terrible outcomes since the technology was introduced in 2019.

Luis Diaz’s disallowed goal against Tottenham in September 2023 will go down in history as one of the biggest refereeing gaffs of all-time.

There have been plenty more besides, too. Speak to supporters, and many will tell you that they’d scrap the system in an instant.

Following news on Thursday, that’s exactly what Wolves are attempting to do. Having been on the end of some shocking decisions this season, the West Midlands club have put forward a vote for the Premier League’s clubs before next term commences.

How are Liverpool reacting to Wolves’ VAR vote

There is likely to be widespread support for Wolves’ proposal by match-going fans. Despite VAR being in situ for five years now, they still haven’t got the in-ground procedure and communication right.

For those watching from home too, the enjoyment of seeing a goal go in has been taken away a considerable amount.

With so many managers bemoaning the technology ever since it’s inception, it feels like Wolves could genuinely get their way here.

But according to The Telegraph, there is still support for VAR out there. And Liverpool are one of the teams to be in its favour.

They claim that both Liverpool and Man United – as well as other ‘heavyweights’ – have ‘moved to kill’ Wolves’ vote. The Reds are said to be ‘understood to be supporting its continued use’ despite Wolves’ concerns.

However, supporters group Spirit of Shankly have reportedly urged the Premier League – and Liverpool – to take fan’s perspectives into account. The Telegraph also claim to have been told that some clubs will vote to continue with VAR, going against Wolves.

Will VAR be scrapped next season

Plenty of people have incredibly strong views on VAR and would love to see it banished from the game forever.

It has certainly become a hot topic ever since its installation and despite small tweaks, has never got to the point where it’s working smoothly.

Nevertheless, there is clearly a need for some kind of technology checking system within the game. It would never have been introduced otherwise.

So, instead of scrapping the whole thing altogether, it seems more prudent to simply change – or train – those who are using it. In our opinion, the technology isn’t the problem, rather those using it.

And with that in mind, though it may be unpopular, we don’t see a world without VAR next season.
