Wrexham must swoop for 'outstanding' 27 G/A star after release, he's haunted Parkinson in the past - opinion

Wrexham will show ambition in this summer’s transfer window and one player who haunted them last season should be on their radar.

Wrexham clinched promotion back to League One for the first time since 2005.

It was an immense achievement by Phil Parkinson as Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds took the players to Las Vegas for the second season running.

The Reds deserved that reward after a long and arduous League Two campaign, which will now be followed by an even tougher challenge in the third tier.

Parkinson stayed at home while the players were partying in the United States as the 56-year-old wants to get a head start on summer recruitment.

The transfer window doesn’t open until June 14th, but the club are no doubt drawing up a shortlist of players they want to sign.

At this stage, it’s only speculation in the window, but Wrexham should race to snap up one player who haunted them last season.

Wrexham can sign Dan Kemp on a free transfer

Dan Kemp spent the first half of the season on loan at Swindon Town and Wrexham supporters will remember him well.

The 25-year-old tore apart the Reds in a 5-5 draw at the STōK Cae Ras, scoring a brace and assisting once on the day.

They were left in awe of his talent as Kemp continued to showcase his quality throughout the campaign, totalling an eye-watering 17 goals and 10 assists in 46 League Two matches.

An attacking midfielder by trade, the Englishman proved to be one of the finest talents the league has seen in recent years, with MK Dons manager Mike Williamson lauding him as “outstanding”.

Remarkably, though, Kemp has just been released upon the expiry of his contract at the Stadium MK. Whether that is due to him not agreeing on a new contract remains to be seen but Wrexham can now rush to sign the talented operator on a free, and they’d be foolish not to.

Dan Kemp can feed Paul Mullin at Wrexham

Wrexham currently lack a creative force from midfield, someone who will grab the ball centrally and feed it to the strikers.

The Reds will find it a lot harder to create chances in League Two and they’ll need to sign someone with that quality to feed Paul Mullin.

Kemp – who eclipsed double figures for assists last term – could be the perfect player to play that second striker role alongside Mullin or as a number 10.

Parkinson’s men are currently reliant on crosses from wide as the likes of James McClean and Ryan Barnett provide the width.

However, if they snapped Kemp up on a free transfer, they’d be adding another dimension to their system centrally and that would be music to the ears of Mullin, who would flourish in front of goal even more.
