Ange Postecoglou reveals he had to have a private chat with ‘angry’ Tottenham player this week

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has revealed he has had to hold a private chat with one of his players this week.

One game remains for the Lilywhites this season with a trip to Sheffield United on Sunday as Tottenham look to secure fifth place.

Ange Postecoglou‘s side have endured a strange week following their game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium against Manchester City.

It was a game which saw the 58-year-old manager lose his cool both on the sideline and in the post-match interviews where he unloaded his frustrations.

And a matter of days on from the game, he has now admitted that he has had to hold a private chat with one of his players following the defeat.

Spurs made a good account of themselves against the champions-elect on Tuesday, but that was not enough for one specific player.

Ange Postecoglou says Tottenham player didn’t act correctly on Tuesday

Considering the narrative going into the game that Spurs would be helping their main rivals, Arsenal, out with a victory, Tottenham gave it a real go at taking three points.

Spurs have been woeful for the best part of two months now with the victory over Burnley last weekend bringing to an end a four-game losing streak.

But the improved performance against City still saw frustration fly around the north London stadium.

And it was not just Postecoglou who let his anger get the better of him in the dugout. Rodrigo Bentancur‘s withdrawal from the game saw the midfielder unload on one of the substitutes’ seats.

Speaking from Hotspur Way on Friday, Postecoglou has now revealed the pair have held a chat about the incident.

“Yeah I saw it, we had a chat about it. He was angry but I don’t think that’s the way you react,” Postecoglou told the media.

“He understands that but it wasn’t the biggest issue of the night for me, that’s for sure.”

“Well, he just wants to win, he wanted to be out there helping the team to win. He felt he wanted to be out there fighting,” the Australian added when asked why Bentancur did it.

Rodrigo Bentancur should get another chance on Sunday

Having been withdrawn after 55 minutes, it is understandable why Bentancur was frustrated as he was enjoying a solid game.

However, Postecoglou was clearly managing the game with the midfielder carrying a yellow card against one of Europe’s best sides.

And he did enjoy a good game up until he was withdrawn.

  • 55 minutes played
  • 1 interception
  • 2/2 dribbles attempted
  • 51 touches
  • 90% pass accuracy
  • 4 fouls

The Uruguayan should get another opportunity to impress on Sunday at Bramall Lane with Yves Bissouma missing the game through injury.

After a tough season for Bentancur, this is certainly a promising way to cap of his campaign as he’s showed signs of returning to his best following two big injuries.
