'I'd be a bit...': Journalist gives fresh verdict on Rohl future at Sheffield Wednesday amid contract talks

Sheffield Wednesday fans are eagerly awaiting to see what happens regarding manager Danny Rohl this summer.

Danny Rohl’s Sheffield Wednesday future is a hot topic right now, following the Owls’ miraculous 20th place finish in the 2023/24 Championship campaign.

There’s rumours that Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri is working on a new deal for Rohl behind the scenes.

It comes after positive talks between the pair following the end of the season, with Rohl reportedly set for further talks with Chansiri later this week.

There’s interest from Rohl elsewhere in the Championship with Sunderland and Hull City both linked ahead of the summer.

Both teams appear to be more keen on other targets. But Sheffield Wednesday fans will still be desperate for Rohl to put pen-to-paper in S6, with his current deal set to expire next summer.

Alan Biggs verdict on Danny Rohl at Sheffield Wednesday

Rohl is hot property in the Championship, and rightly so; his turnaround at Sheffield Wednesday was one of the greatest that the Championship has ever seen.

After beating Sunderland 2-0 on the final day of the season, the Owls became the first team in Championship history to beat the drop after going winless in their opening 13 games of the season.

And commenting on X on whether or not Rohl stays this summer, Biggs said: “I’d be a bit surprised if not.”

Sheffield Wednesday is Rohl’s first managerial job, following coaching roles with all of Red Bull Leipzig, Southampton, Bayern Munich, and the German national team.

His Wednesday record currently stands at 16 wins from 38 games, with 16 losses.

Sheffield Wednesday facing one key enemy right now

Regardless of which teams show an interest in Rohl, or what happens with his future, there’s one constant threat that Wednesday face where Rohl is concerned; time.

The more time that passes by with Rohl not penning a contract, the more risk that Sheffield Wednesday face of eventually losing him for nothing next summer.

There’s rumoured to be a £10million compensation package in place for Rohl and his backroom team in S6, and £5million for Rohl alone, and if Rohl’s future doesn’t lie in Sheffield then the Owls will want some money to show for it.

So securing a new contract for Rohl is absolutely vital for Sheffield Wednesday; perhaps even more so than keeping Rohl himself.

The Owls need to give themselves some financial security over his future and try to completely avoid the risk of losing him for nothing in a year’s time.

But so far, it seems so good, with Rohl and Chansiri clearly in discussions and no signs of those discussions hitting any kind of hurdles.
