Sixty flights at the Munich Airport were cancelled on Saturday following a protest action by climate activists that shut down the airport for nearly two hours earlier in the day.

The passengers have all been rebooked on other aircraft, airport spokesman Robert Wilhelm told dpa, adding that 1,000 departures and landings had been planned for Saturday.

All 140,000 passengers would reach their destinations, although a large proportion would be delayed, Wilhelm said. The police said 14 airplanes due to land in Munich had been diverted to other airports.

The terminals in Munich were very full, as it was a holiday weekend. Long queues had formed at the rebooking counters in particular. Airport staff provided waiting travellers with water and snacks.

The spokesman emphasized that the airport had complied with all security regulations that apply to European air traffic. But airports can only arm themselves against violent interventions to a limited extent, he said. It was important that the chain of responses be set quickly in motion after the intrusion became known.

Air traffic was halted after climate activists from the Last Generation group had cut a hole in one of the fences and made it onto the tarmac around 5 am (0300 GMT). Six of them glued themselves to a taxiway. The police arrested a total of eight people.
