'Perfection': BBC pundit amazed by what £35m Liverpool player did in first-half vs Wolves on Sunday

Glenn Murray has lauded one Liverpool star for a perfect piece of play during the first-half of the Reds’ final day win over Wolves at Anfield.

Liverpool managed to send Jurgen Klopp off into the sunset with a victory over Gary O’Neil’s side on Sunday, with Alexis Mac Allister and Jarell Quansah scoring before the break for the Carabao Cup winners.

Liverpool’s title hopes evaporated a little while ago, but they would have been desperate to round off Klopp’s tenure with a win – while also making a bit of a statement for incoming boss Arne Slot.

Certainly, it would be no surprise to see Slot build his side partially around Mac Allister after what has been a promising first year at Anfield for the Argentinian.

Alexis Mac Allister lauded as Liverpool win on final day

The 25-year-old bagged his fifth league goal of the campaign against Wolves. And speaking on BBC Final Score (broadcast on 19/5; 16:37), Glenn Murray suggested that the midfielder did superbly to give his side the lead, heading home a Harvey Elliott cross.

“That was a lovely run by Mac Allister, gets in between a couple of the defenders, just in there. He’s not the tallest, but just times his jump to perfection, uses the pace on the ball, flicks it into the far corner, really nice header,” he said.

Reds may face battle to keep World Cup winner

The form of Mac Allister is going unnoticed elsewhere, with the £35 million man proving to be the standout midfielder for Liverpool across the course of the campaign.

He has proved his versatility, playing in that deeper role, as well as a more traditional central midfielder. And given his age, he should be approaching the peak of his powers.

Real Madrid reportedly have Mac Allister on their radar for 2025. Liverpool will obviously hope to be able to convince him to stay on Merseyside, but much may come down to how they fare in their first season with Slot at the helm.

Slot is definitely going to need time, particularly given the shoes he is stepping into. But he certainly has an impressive group of players to build with, with Mac Allister one of the most exciting.
