Opinion: West Ham signing 24-year-old just released by Tottenham is an absolute no-brainer

Ryan Sessegnon has been released by Tottenham Hotspur, and now the door is wide open for West Ham United to sign him on a free transfer.

Tottenham signed Ryan Sessegnon from Fulham in the summer of 2019 for around £25 million, but have now released him after five years in north London.

Now West Ham are in a great position to pick up the 24-year-old. He could well be a superb signing for us, in spite of his obvious struggles with Spurs – one man’s trash is another man’s treasure and all that.

Incoming Hammers boss Julen Lopetegui needs to strengthen his squad in pretty every much department this summer.

The Spaniard apparently wants to sign at least six new players for West Ham this summer, and the addition of someone who can provide cover and competition for Emerson Palmieri will be an absolute must.

The beauty of Sessegnon is that he can play in an attacking role as well, so signing him on a free would be like getting two players for absolutely nothing.

An opportunity like that cannot be passed up when a club is in need of such a big squad overhaul…

West Ham could sign Ryan Sessegnon after he was released by Tottenham

Fabrizio Romano took to Twitter today to confirm that Sessegnon will be released:

Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou has obviously decided that the former Fulham man has no future whatsoever at the club.

And now’s the time for West Ham to throw their hat in the ring in the race for his signature.

Sessegnon is just what we need down the left hand side. He has pace and power in abundance and can play as a left-back, a left wing-back or a winger – left or right.

Look, if he doesn’t work out at the London Stadium, the Hammers can either sell him for a fee or just release him in two or three years.

It’s not like we would have paid a fee for him is it!

The 24-year-old free agent is clearly an incredible talent, but his terrible injury record will be an obvious concern for Lopetegui and the Hammers owners.

He has missed 439 games through injury since the start of the 2022/23 season (Transfermarkt).

With Ryan Sessegnon having been released by Tottenham though, there is a an opportunity for someone to secure a real coup by signing him.

It won’t be an addition made without risk though, and it remains to be seen whether the West Ham board would be prepared to pay him the kind of salary he’d be looking for.
