'The feeling today': Fabrizio Romano shares what Chelsea are planning to do with Mauricio Pochettino

Mauricio Pochettino’s future at Chelsea is up in the air, and Fabrizio Romano has shared the latest on the situation.

The Blues managed to recover well after what was a disastrous first half of the season. Many people were convinced that they would finish in the bottom half of the table again.

However, Chelsea ended the season in sixth and will play European football in 2024/25. That could end up saving Pochettino’s job.

Todd Boehly’s plan for Mauricio Pochettino at Chelsea

Chelsea appointed Mauricio Pochettino as their new manager in the summer of 2023 after interim boss Frank Lampard left the club.

The Argentine’s move to Stamford Bridge was a bit controversial because of his past allegiances with the Blues’ fierce rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

However, Todd Boehly ignored those concerns and handed Pochettino the job.

The 52-year-old has come under enormous criticism at Stamford Bridge for some of his side’s performances. At the turn of 2024, it looked very likely that he would be sacked.

The Blues were even linked with moves to appoint other managers.

However, after Chelsea’s strong end to the season in which they finished just three points behind Tottenham, the Argentine’s fortunes look a lot better.

Fabrizio Romano has shared the latest on the situation, and he has revealed that Pochettino really wants to stay at Chelsea for the upcoming season.

The journalist further revealed that Boehly’s ‘priority’ right now is to hold talks with Pochettino to see if they can continue together for another year.

Romano said in his Daily Briefing: “Mauricio Pochettino is waiting to have direct contacts with Chelsea over his future – it’s not easy, because unlike at some clubs where there is just one owner or one director, at Chelsea there are many people involved to make sure Pochettino is happy with the project at Stamford Bridge, and that they are happy with him.

“Of course, Pochettino wants to continue – he is really convinced by what he and his coaching team can offer, and by the skills of these players. Still, the meeting will be important to understand if they’re all on the same page.

“In case Chelsea and Pochettino decide to part ways, the Blues’ idea is to go for a young coach rather than an experienced coach.

“That’s the feeling today, that’s the current idea – to discuss with Pochettino and understand if they can continue together, which is the priority, but if they can’t agree on terms then keep an eye on young managers for Chelsea.”

Mauricio Pochettino’s stats at Chelsea in 2024

Some of the criticism that was directed at Mauricio Pochettino was a bit harsh, but managers are always to blame when results don’t go their way.

The Argentine stuck by his beliefs despite many calls to see him sacked, and that, in the end, helped his side to finish in a really strong way.

In the Premier League since the turn of 2024, Chelsea played 18 games under Pochettino, and their record looks really, really good.

They ended up losing just three out of those 18 fixtures – two of those came to Arsenal and Liverpool.

10 wins and five draws in the second half of the season is not bad at all considering where the Blues were at the end of 2023.

An argument can certainly be made that Pochettino deserves another chance, but whether the Argentine and Todd Boehly can reach an agreement over the direction of the club remains to be seen.
