'A new level': Ally McCoist now claims £45m Chelsea man is the most improved player in the Premier League

Rangers legend Ally McCoist thinks Chelsea have the most improved player in the Premier League.

It is a very young Chelsea squad, but some members in it have really gone up another level compared to the last campaign.

Conor Gallagher and Cole Palmer are just a couple of examples.

The former was not a regular in the previous season, making just 18 starts in the Premier League, but has been so important for Chelsea this term. This time around, Gallagher made 37 starts and finished the campaign with a WhoScored rating of 7.13, the second highest in his squad.

As for Palmer, the attacker came up with 33 goal contributions in as many top-flight games for the Blues, not much else needs to be said. Troy Deeney is now looking forward to seeing more of him next year.

Outside of Chelsea, the likes of Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze and Luton Town’s Ross Barkley have also shown signs of improvement this season.

However, McCoist thinks Palmer has just gone up to a completely different level.

Speaking on talkSPORT (21/05/2024 at 09:25), the former striker said: “Most improved player? People like Ross Barkley, Eze.

“I’ll tell you what? You can give it to Cole Palmer, who has always been very, very good, but he has taken it to a new level.”

Cole Palmer’s stats from last season

You do not have to be a football expert to know that Palmer has improved over the last year.

Clearly feeling that he was not at the level to play regularly, Pep Guardiola only handed Palmer two starts in the Premier League last season.

In total, the Englishman made 25 appearances for Manchester City, managing just the one goal.

Being overlooked by Guardiola, Palmer moved to Chelsea last summer in a £45m deal that can now only be described as an absolute bargain.
