Michael Carrick may now have solution to potential Middlesbrough conundrum this summer - opinion

Michael Carrick may already have the solution to a potential issue this summer.

Middlesbrough finished eighth in the Championship, falling short of the play-offs in a season many had tipped them to secure automatic promotion prior to the start of the campaign.

However, given Carrick‘s side did not win in the league until their seventh game, the Boro boss can reflect on a job well done once the initial disappointment has worn off.

There were a number of impressive performers at The Riverside this season and this is bound to lead to summer interest.

Seny Dieng could leave Middlesborough this summer

One such player is goalkeeper, Seny Dieng.

The 29-year-old only joined Boro last summer from QPR for a fee believed to be in the region of £2 million but the club could be set to turn a quick profit this summer.

Dieng has been impressive in his solitary year at the club, keeping ten Championship clean sheets and conceding just 47 goals.

His performances have reportedly attracted the attention of the likes of Crystal Palace and Newcastle United and it would be very difficult for Boro to turn down a Premier League approach.

Returning Sol Brynn could replace Dieng

Fortunately for Carrick and Boro, a returning loan player could be ready to take on the number one role; meaning the club could spend any money they receive for Dieng on improving other areas of the squad.

That is because young goalkeeper Sol Brynn has returned to the club fresh off the back of an impressive season on loan at League One side Leyton Orient.

The 23-year-old kept 13 clean sheets in 42 league games in the third tier, conceding 47 goals according to Transfermarkt, as he helped Orient to a mid-table finish.

If Dieng stays at the club, Brynn could well look for a permanent move away from Teesside to be the number one elsewhere.

However, Carrick would be wise to try and keep the promising ‘keeper at the club with his current first-choice stopper facing a summer of speculation.
