Aston Villa target first summer transfer as midfielder linked by ‘reliable sources’

Aston Villa will soon turn their attention to the summer transfer window, with one target now emerging.

Unai Emery and Monchi will be hopeful of improving Aston Villa’s squad this summer in the transfer window, as the Villans hope to continue their progression under the Spaniard’s reign.

The 2023/24 campaign ended remarkably for Villa, who secured Champions League football for next season with a fourth-place finish, ending the term two points clear of Spurs and five points clear of Chelsea.

Despite the domestic calendar coming to a close, Emery and Monchi’s work will soon restart, as the summer transfer window nears its opening, handing the Spanish duo plenty of opportunity to strengthen the squad.

Speculation has already started regarding players the Midlands club could target, with one name now mentioned as having the ability to bolster the midfield.

Aston Villa could sign Wilfred Ndidi as a free agent this summer

While the current news flooding Villa Park regarding a midfielder is the future of Ross Barkley, another player with Premier League experience has been linked with a move.

On the 1874 podcast, journalist Dan Bardell shared that Leicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi could be a possible target for Villa this summer, as he prepares to become a free agent.

“Ndidi on a free is one that I’ve heard from reliable sources, as a more Dendoncker replacement.

“With Kamara being out until October, there kind of is a need for that type of player.

“He’s played with Tielemans before, he has shown in the Premier League, he can form part of a top-five team in the past.”

The 27-year-old has made 192 Premier League appearances, as well as featuring in the Champions League for Leicester, possessing a host of experience for no cost, something that could tempt Monchi and Emery.

Wilfred Ndidi would be a good signing for Unai Emery

Sporting 53 caps for Nigeria and having a lot of Premier League experience under his belt, Ndidi could be the perfect signing for Emery this summer, particularly with the exit of Leander Dendoncker in mind.

The Belgian spent half of the season on loan at Napoli, who opted against making his move permanent, leaving his future up in the air at present, with an exit from Villa almost certain.

While Ndidi has been playing in the Championship this term with the Foxes, the defensive midfielder has the fundamentals to be a strong asset for Emery to target.

It’s integral that Villa look for both depth and quality this summer whilst trying to balance their finances, making the prospect of a free transfer for a greatly-experienced player the ideal scenario.

It will be interesting to see if the Villans pounce on the Nigerian’s availability this summer.
