Kyle Petty predicts more drama between Kyle Busch and Ricky Stenhouse Jr.: ‘Tip of the iceberg’

Kyle Petty believes this isn’t the last bit of drama we’re going to see from Kyle Busch and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. over the course of the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series campaign.

The duo had an altercation after No. 47 wheelman was sent into the wall by Busch on Lap 2 of the 200-lap race. With $1,000,000 on the line, both drivers were on edge and looking for every edge they could gain early in the race, and the money could’ve gone a long way for Stenhouse Jr.’s single-car team.

A large contingent agreed that on the ensuing replay, it looked like Stenhouse didn’t really do anything wrong to Busch. He ran up the middle and Busch got into the wall. So, the No. 47 wheelman was certainly stewing over the situation, and ended up confronting Busch after the race.

According to Petty, the fight that overshadowed the All-Star Race is just the beginning of what could be a season-long battle between the No. 8 and the No. 47.

“How about that footage. Ricky Stenhouse, standing there. Leaned up against the tailgate of that truck. It looked like a showdown in a John Wayne western. Kyle Busch walks up. Ricky Stenhouse comes up. They have a few words, and then boom, the punch. The punch that we’re going to talk about for a long time, because it landed. That punch landed. Down goes Kyle Busch, down goes Kyle Busch. Let me say this though, in this day and time, if I drove, I would never fight. Those pit crews are ex-NFL players, and ex-college football players. I don’t want to tangle with those guys,” Petty explained. “Guys, Ricky Stenhouse’s dad, he waved into it. All you hear as Ricky’s on the ground, ‘Get my dad, get my dad.’ This is not the last we’re going to hear from Ricky Stenhouse, and this is not the last we’re going to hear from Kyle Busch.

“This was a fight. Punches were thrown. This was not a scuffle. This was not a girl-fight. This was not what we see often in Cup racing. This is something that has built to this point over multiple years, and this is just the tip of the iceberg. I’d look for more of it. And oh yeah, Joey Logano wins a million dollars in the All-Star Race.”

Alas, it’s tough to argue with Kyle Petty’s sentiment, especially after Ricky Stenhouse Jr. threatened to wreck Kyle Busch during the Coca-Cola 600. We’ll see if there’s anymore retaliation this coming weekend, and throughout the rest of the season, like Petty’s predicting.
