Former Japan head coach Yoshinobu Ishii, who guided the national soccer team during 1986-1987, has died, J-League first division side FC Tokyo said Friday. He was 79.
Ishii, an adviser to FC Tokyo since 2001, died on Thursday. His family did not disclose the cause of death or other details.
Ishii took over as national team coach from Takaji Mori, who failed to guide the squad to qualifying for the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. Ishii retired after Japan lost the chance to compete at the 1988 Seoul Summer Olympics.
Ishii was the manager at Fujita (current Shonan Bellmare) and steered the club to winning the first division of the Japan Soccer League in 1977 and 1979.
