Trump's Running Out Of People To Offend, So He Revisits An Old Grudge

Two politicians, neither alike in dignity, from ancient grudge break to new mutiny—as the Bard would put it. To be more specific, Trump and London's Mayor, Sadiq Khan, are back at it, as Trump reignited the feud ahead of his latest visit to the UK.

What happened?

And what an unfortunate way to escalate the confrontation on Trump's part. As usual, the POTUS took to Twitter to voice his discontent—this time sinking international diplomacy to a new low. In his most recent rampage, Trump specifically took aim at the left-wing mayor by calling him a "stone cold loser."

"[Sadiq Khan] has been foolishly “nasty” to the visiting President of the United States, by far the most important ally of the United Kingdom. He is a stone cold loser who should focus on crime in London, not me," Trump said in his tweet. He followed that comment by taking a shot at New York City's own mayor, who also stands against Trump, by saying that "Kahn reminds me very much of our very dumb and incompetent Mayor of NYC, de Blasio, who has also done a terrible job"

What could've caused it?

The insult came mere days after an op-edwritten by Khan was published in The Observer, in which Khan basically argued that Trump is a contemporary authoritarian figure.

"Donald Trump is just one of the most egregious examples of a growing global threat. The far right is on the rise around the world, threatening our hard-won rights and freedoms and the values that have defined our liberal, democratic societies for more than seventy years," said London's mayor in the piece.

Speaking about Trump and similar authoritarian figures, Khan added that

"They are intentionally pitting their own citizens against one another, regardless of the horrific impact in our communities. They are picking on minority groups and the marginalized to manufacture an enemy – and encouraging others to do the same."

Which is why Khan was explicitly against Trump's visit, pointing out that it is "un-British to be rolling out the red carpet this week for a formal state visit for a president whose divisive behavior flies in the face of the ideals America was founded upon – equality, liberty and religious freedom."

Soon after, Khan posted a video in his Twitter account to stand against the recent anti-abortion waves in the U.S. and asking Trump specifically to stand for women's rights. "Women have the right to autonomy over their own bodies and their reproductive rights should be protected – in London, the USA, everywhere," Khan wrote in the post.

An old feud

This was not the first time Trump and Khan confronted each other on Twitter and elsewhere. The two have been at it since at least 2015, as Trump enforced his "Muslim ban" after the that year's Paris attacks. Khan, a muslim himself, spoke out against the ban and Trump's anti-Muslim rhetoric, and increased his criticism after getting elected as mayor in 2016.

The two have engaged in various spats ever since, with Trump calling Khan an "ignorant" on "Good Morning Britain" soon after, and Khan granting permission for the famous "Trump baby" balloon to protest Trump's visit to London last year.
