This guy again? Those following the long-retired Green Bay Packers’ quarterback Brett Favre on Instagram yesterday most likely felt compelled to just shut their phones off in disbelief after an apparent fake post broke news detailing a comeback to football for the 11 time Pro–Bowler.
After igniting several chaotic hours, including head–scratching speculation from both fans and NFL analysts, Favre deleted the post, claiming an unnamed hacker stood responsible for the entire fiasco and that he wishes to remain retired. Rest assured, the 49–year-old Super Bowl champion possesses no plans to return to the gridiron, which poises to benefit both Favre and fans opposed to seeing yet another once-incredible athlete mistakenly play past their prime age.
The post initially included a picture depicting Favre after his Super Bowl XXXI victory and a caption that read out, “A true champion sticks to his or her calling. I will be coming out of retirement and making my return to play in the NFL for the 2020 season. Stay tuned for more news!” The only news that followed came not as a supplement to the original post, but a firm proclamation declining any legitimacy regarding Favre looking to end his retirement.
Often generating friendly banter and even some excitement, players such as Chad Johnson or Terrell Owens continue to play with fans’ minds, hinting from time to time about potentially rejoining the NFL. However, anytime Favre participates his actions quickly warrant eye rolls and a general displeasure within the NFL crowd, as his multiple incidents illustrating his non–commitment to a football–free life has grown to annoy football fans throughout the years.
Favre retired after his 2008 season, then returned just months later, yet then retired once more after a 2009 season quarterbacking for the New York Jets. Favre played the comeback role once more, however this time as a Minnesota Viking and played for another two years until at last retiring for a third and final time after the 2011 season.
