Ed Sheeran Announces Retirement As He Faces Legal Charges For Plagiarism

One of the world's most popular and successful singers,Ed Sheeran,shocked fans during a tour concert at Ipswich, England, by announcing that he would be taking a break from music as soon as his current two-year tour ends.

And though his retirement comes as a bittersweet respite from what must be an exhausting (but incredibly successful) run, not everything is well in Sheeran's world. The "Shape of You" singer will be confronting legal woes in the coming months, facing serious accusations of plagiarizingmaterial for his songs.

A troubled farewell

Sheeran is scheduled to appear in court in two weeks' timeto deal with allegations that he stole tunes from Marvin Gaye's 1973 hit "Let's Get It On" for his song "Thinking Out Loud." Partial copyrights owner Structured Asset Sales is suing the star for a whopping $100 million.

But that's not all. Sheeran is also blocked from receiving royalties for his international hit "Shape of You" while further plagiarism investigations take place,following accusations from fellow artist Sam Chokri that he ripped off his 2015 track "Oh Why."

Pop phenomenon

Sheeran recently released his fourth album, No. 6 Collaborations Project, which (unsurprisingly) debuted at No. 1 in 12 different countries to become a pop music phenomenon—featuring instant hits like "Beautiful People." You've probably heard that one by now, right?

As the star said his goodbyes during the concert, he did say "See you in a few years' time," indicating that he plans to return after taking his well-earned rest. Unless his legal battles take over his career, that is.
