An unfortunate catch

Conservation groups have strongly criticized the incident, especially since blue sharks are listed as near threatenedon the International Union for Conservation of Nature red list. Furthermore, blue sharks are labeled a priority species in the UKunder the post-2010 biodiversity framework, making it an important population in and around the islands.

The shark was reportedly captured by accident, in what is known as"by catch,"which is when certain species of fish and other marine organisms are trapped in commercial fishing nets inadvertently and by mistake.

Widespread criticism

Killing the shark and parading it in such a ghastly manner, however, was certainlynot an accident. As such, the Plymouth city council denounced the careless action:

“Unfortunately during this year’s Seafood festival a shark was inadvertently caught as a by-catch by a local fisherman on one of their regular commercial fishing activities and was then brought to the ‘catch of the day’ session on the main stage of the Seafood festival. We and our partners are committed to protecting our marine environment and sustainable fishing, especially around endangered species such as sharks, and we do not condone what happened and we want to make sure this does not happen again in future events.”

Experts from the Plymouth-based Ocean Conservation Trust also spoke outagainst the event, with one of its members stating:

"As an ocean conservation charity, we do not condone the eating of blue shark and were disappointed to see that a blue shark was shown off as well as being featured on the chef’s stage."

Eating a member of an endangered species is bad enough. But parading her or him through the streets as if it were something to celebrateis outright barbaric.
