Amazon presented its plans this week for three renewable energy projects that support The Climate Pledge, a goal made by the company and Global Optimism that encourages other businesses to reach the Paris Agreement 10 years ahead of schedule.
In September, Amazon co-founded The Climate Pledge with Global Optimism, an organization that uses a positive approach to encourage social and environmental change, which "calls on signatories to be net zero carbon across their businesses by 2040." To accomplish this, Amazon announced three new projects on Tuesday designed to help the company reach this goal and be powered by 100% renewable energy by 2030.
The renewable energy projects, all of which will bring solar energy to their respective regions, will be taking place in Sevilla, Spain; Lee County, Illinois; and Northern Virginia.
In Spain, the company will be developing a new solar farm, which is expected to have a capacity of 149 MW. The combined capacity of the projects in Illinois and Northern Virginia will total 180 MW and are expected to generate about 400,000 MWh of renewable energy each year.
Between the three regions, over 5.3 million MWh of renewable energy are predicted to be produced annually.
Not only will these projects aid the company in reaching The Climate Pledge, but they will also help Amazon reach 80% renewable energy by 2024 and 100% by 2030.
