Qualcomm and Niantic team up to create AR glasses

Qualcomm and the developers behind "Pokémon Go" and "Harry Potter: Wizards Unite" have announced that they're working together to create a set of AR glasses and related hardware, software, and cloud-based technologies.

On Thursday at Qualcomm Technologies' yearly Snapdragon Technology Summit, the company announced its plans to embark on a multi-year collaboration with Niantic, the California-based software development company known for its creation of "Pokémon Go" and "Harry Potter: Wizards Unite." Thanks to this partnership, the brands will be working together to make their own AR ecosystem consisting of AR glasses, hardware, software, and cloud components.

To ensure that these technologies are compatible and interoperable with what's already on the market, Qualcomm stated that this upcoming platform will be optimized for the Snapdragon XR2 Platform, which is the brand's first 5G-supported platform, and the Niantic Real World Platform, which is the AR tech that powers games like "Pokémon Go."

Neither company announced at the summit when the public can expect to see the AR glasses or any relevant hardware. It's likely that development of such technologies is still in the very early stages.
