Pelosi Says Trump Is ‘Impeached For Life’ As Senate Trial Begins

WASHINGTON, DC - DECEMBER 05: Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) announced that the House will proceed with articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump at the Speaker's Balcony in the U.S. Capitol December 05, 2019 in Washington, DC.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-California) claimed Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell‘s support of a resolution to dismiss the articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump was a “cover-up.”

“The dismissing is a cover-up. Dismissing is a cover-up,” Pelosi told ABC News. “If they want to go that route, again the senators who are thinking now about voting for witnesses or not, they will have to be accountable for not having a fair trial.”

She also said that no matter what the Senate chooses to do, Trump has been “impeached for life.”

“This president is impeached for life regardless of any gamesmanship on the part of Mitch McConnell,” she said. “There is nothing the Senate can do to ever erase that.”

Pelosi has criticized McConnell for dismissing the trial before it has even started.

Last week, he signed onto a resolution from Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Missouri) that calls for the dismissal of the two charges against Trump — abuse of power and obstruction of Congress — because of the delay in receiving the articles from Pelosi. The resolution does not have the necessary votes yet.

Pelosi said she does not regret her decision to delay the articles by nearly a month, and insisted she planned to send them after she could ensure a fair trial.

She said holding the articles is “raising the profile of the fact that we need to have witnesses and documentation, and if we don’t that it’s a cover-up.”

“I’ve always said I would send them over,” she added. “There shouldn’t be any mystery to that.”
