Super Bowl LIV Betting Odds, Info & History: Chiefs Favored Slightly

SANTA CLARA, CALIFORNIA - JANUARY 11: Jimmy Garoppolo #10 of the San Francisco 49ers attempts a pass against the Minnesota Vikings during the NFC Divisional Round Playoff game at Levi's Stadium on January 11, 2020 in Santa Clara, California

Ahead of Super Bowl 54, which takes place on Sunday, February 2, 6:30 ET on Fox, the Chiefs enter the game as -1.5 favorites over the 49ers, according to Caesars Sportsbook. The Chiefs finished off the Titans 35-24 and the 49ers beat the Packers 37-20 Sunday.

“We had the Chiefs a little higher than the 49ers in our power ratings. You can make a case for either team, and I expect decent, balanced action from the public,” Alan Berg senior oddsmaker for Caesars Sportsbook told ESPN  Sunday night. In the history of the league, no Super Bowl has had two teams with seemingly identical odds and only four have had a spread of less than two, according to ESPN Stats & Information.

The Mirage and Caesar books have the underdog 49ers at +100 and the favorite Chiefs listed at -120, according to Forbes, while bookmaker William Hill took a $33,000 early bet on the Chiefs at pick ’em. At Westgate Superbook in Las Vegas, 70% of early bets were on the Chiefs, which doesn’t come as a surprise because they were the favorite to win before the season began, according to ESPN.

This is Kansas City’s first Super Bowl appearance since 1970 when they defeated the Minnesota Vikings 23-7.

At Caesars Sportsbook, San Francisco were not even among the top ten favorites to win it all prior to the start of the season with 40-1 odds. They return for the first time since 1995 when they defeated the Chargers 49-26. The favorite has won 34 of 53 Super Bowls, but favorites of three points or less are 8-7. The over/under initially opened at 51.5 and has since moved to 52.5 Sunday night.
