Katie Sowers will be the first female coach in Super Bowl history. Sowers is a full-time offensive assistant coach with the San Francisco 49ers, and she will be the first female coach in the most important sporting event in the US, as well as the first openly gay coach to work in the NFL.
Hailing from Hesston, Kansas, Sowers started playing football at the age of 8, along with her twin sister, Lys, and a big sports fan father. She went to the University of Central Missouri, where she obtained a master’s in Kinesiology, while she also worked as a college football coach.
Back then, Sowers was a victim of discrimination; she didn’t get paid and was rejected as a volunteer. But she was determined to keep going, and when she graduated, she decided to try making it in professional football.

She started out with the West Michigan Mayhem, participating in the Women’s Football Alliance tournament. Then, she joined the US women’s national football team, which won the world championship and a gold medal in 2013. But a hip injury forced her to stop playing professionally and try a new career in the field.
Currently, she is assistant to offensive coordinator Curtis Modkins with the San Francisco 49ers, a team that has welcomed her and recognized her worth as a fierce and talented woman.
Katie’s story is an example of struggle and integration that speaks to other women in the sports world. It shows that it’s time to put an end to all gender barriers in American sports.
