A Maplewood man had good reason to flee after he was pulled over for speeding in Bayonne.

As police approached 25-year-old Hakeem O. Gayle’s car early Thursday morning, he sped off and then crashed at 49th Street and Broadway, Capt. Eric Amato said. Gayle then fled on foot before he was taken into custody by police on 47th Street.

A search by police led to the recovery of a fraudulent New York driver’s license and six fraudulent Visa credit/debit cards bearing various identities, Amato said.

Gayle was also issued summonses for careless driving, failure to stop at a stop sign and reckless driving.

The crash by Gayle damaged a fire hydrant at the corner of 48th Street and Broadway and also damaged the Stat Medical Center building at 989 Broadway, Amato said.

Gayle was charged with resisting arrest, fraudulent government documents, credit card theft, eluding and hindering apprehension. Gayle was also found to be wanted on four warrants, two from Union, and one each from Elizabeth and Maplewood.
