Indian actor Irrfan Khan, a Bollywood superstar best known by Western audiences for his performances in popular films such as Life of Pi, Slumdog Millionaire, and Jurassic World, died at 53 in Mumbai, India.
The actor spent several days at the Kokilaben Hospital UCI for complications due to a neuroendocrine tumor, a rare type of cancer, he had been battling since 2018.
"Irrfan was a strong soul, someone who fought till the very end and always inspired everyone who came close to him," said his publicist in a statement, adding that he spent his last days "surrounded by love, his family, for whom he most cared about."
After his debut on TV, Khan moved to cinema with a cameo in the 1988 filmSalaam Bombay!, directed by Mira Nair, which was nominated to an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. Later on, after working in Indian television, he participated in the international movie The Warrior, directed by Asif Kapadia, which won a BAFTA for Best British Film in 2001.

In 2003, he played Macbeth in Maqbool, directed by Vishal Bharadwaj, and in 2006, he worked again with Mira Nair in the American production The Namesake. In 2007, he had a role in Wes Anderson's The Darjeeling Limited, and in 2008, he worked with Danny Boyle in Slumdog Millionaire, which earned him an award by the Screen Actors Guild, along with the rest of the cast, for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.
