Spotify testing video podcast streaming with a pair of YouTube stars

Spotify is launching a handful of video podcast episodes on the platform as part of a feature experiment.

On Wednesday, The Verge reported that Spotify is dappling in video podcasting. The media outlet reported that the streaming service is currently testing the content format on the platform with a show called "Zane and Heath: Unfiltered," a video podcast series created by the pair of YouTube stars Zane Hijazi and Heath Hussar.

The test is global and, according to The Verge's source, "will show up for 50 percent of the show's Spotify podcast listeners." Only the three latest episodes -- numbers 28 to 30 -- will be available for viewing.

Visually, there's no indication in the interface that this podcast has an accompanying video; it's only revealed when a user presses play and sees it at the bottom of the page. By tapping on the video, it can be pulled out for full-screen viewing.

In the past, Spotify integrated music videos into its platform, but this addition directly parallels its current push to lead in the podcast business. In August, Spotify tested an in-app podcast creation tool, and back in February 2019, the company acquired Gimlet and Anchor, two major podcasting companies.
