今回は英語教師でありながらファッションモデルとして活動の幅を広げる彼のパーソナルな部分をさらに掘り下げるロングインタビュー。
ジョシュアの学びと思想感、一人のモデルとして歩み始めた夢とファッションへの情熱、さらにレスリーとの共通点ともなる「JOSHUA & LESLIE MOST FAVORITE 50」もお届けします。

――様々な学びの中で見つけた教師という夢。日本で教えたいものがたくさんあるのが嬉しい理由。
Becoming an English teacher in Japan, has given me more dreams and happiness, to continue my love to learn and share my thoughts with the world.
知識を得たり学問や教養を学ぶことが昔から好きで、その一つにTESOL（英語の教授法）の博士号を取得する目標を持っていました。
ライト州立大学では、英語や中国語、シェイクスピアから航空学まで幅広く学び、ジェンダー社会研究学も専攻。青少年の非行の統計についても興味があり研究したりしてたんだ。環境化学のコースでは水質調査や土壌調査など実験室研究がメインで、レオナルドダビンチについて論文を書いたりもしてね。ちなみにデルタ大学にも通い準学士号を取得。数学をメインにアフリカ文学や科学関連、天文学まで勉強したんだ（笑）。
Q1. What did you study and which university did you graduate in America ?
I studied at two colleges. One was in the state of Michigan. Delta College is where I studied to receive my Associate of Science Degree. I studied a lot of Math classes and even studied Astronomy! I studied some African Literature and mainly courses that were Science related. I took an Environmental Science course that included many laboratory observations. We tested water samples and soil samples. I took a Colloquy course studying Leonardo Di Vinci and ourselves.
I moved back to my hometown Ohio after the 4 months intership in Japan and attended the Wright State University for my Bachelors in the Arts with a TESOL concentration. Many English courses were taken as well as a few Chinese language classes. I studied Shakespeare and Aviation. Sociology of Gender and a Research Methods class were also taken. Another Sociology course I took pertained to Juvenile Delinquents because not every teenager is an angel and I wanted to study the statistics. Many TESOL courses were studied and applied.

On 15 December 2018, Joshua proudly graduated with a Bachelor Degree at the Wright State University in Ohio, America. He was able to express his gratitude towards his dearest mother Debra, who has raised him up as a single mother.
英語教師を本格的に目指すきっかとなったのは、TESOLのプログラム終了後の日本でのインターンシップ。元々友人が海外で教師をしていて、僕もアメリカを飛び出して世界で英語を教えたいと思ってはいて。それで岡山理科大学で4ヶ月間参加したんだけど、自分が教えたことが生徒の力になっていく、その瞬間に立ち会えることにやりがいを見い出したんだ。特に10代の若い学生たちに自分の知識や経験を教育という形で教えることは、不思議な表現だけど「勲章」を与えられたような意義のある仕事だと思えたよ。情熱を注げるということは天職だしね。
Q2.Why do you decide to teach English to the Japanese and how will you like to teach ?
Having studied in the TESOL program and getting the opportunity to have an internship in Japan helped me realize that this is something I could do and do with love. There are some major differences like the eating and drinking in the classroom rule. I hope that working as an ALT teacher at first will help me gauge the current education system as is and figure out from there what steps or procedures I can accomplish in the classroom. I would like to see more students asking questions and teachers interacting more with the students. I would like to see more activities during classroom involvement. I would like to see a more opened mindset to trying new things. I remember hearing many negative comments on things I was trying to utilize in the classroom.

Working internship as an English teacher for 4 months in Okayama University of Science from August to December 2017. Evolving his love and interest for Japanese culture and lifestyle.
教師としてやるべきことはまだ始まったばかり。ALTとして日本の学校に関わることで今の日本の学校の既存システムを知り、そこから徐々にプロセスや仕組みを理解できていくとは思うんだけど、もっと生徒が積極的に発言したり、先生がインタラクティブな授業を展開できると良いなと思っています。日本の生徒は恥ずかしがり屋さんで、自己主張に慣れていないと感じる場面が多いからね。共通点や同じ趣味を見つけるだけで壁を取り除くことができるはず。新しいことを取り入れるのには批判的な意見もあるけど、時代に合わせた新しいスタイルや環境が、これからの未来を作っていくと信じているよ。
Q3.What did you learn from the 4 months internship as an English teacher in Okayama University of Science in 2017 ?
I came to learn that students can be very shy and reluctant to participate or asking questions.
I think finding common ground or interests helps lower their affective filter and eases their fears in public speaking. I learned some students that were having a hard time with learning the material really just needed extra caring from their teachers. Once given, I saw them trying harder on their tests.
It was as if they had a point to prove. It was a great feeling and a great thing to witness. As scary as it sounds, I found out teaching teenagers is quite rewarding. I found teaching teenage students to be most fruitful.

――モデルへの淡い期待と諦めの姿勢。夢への近道とチャンスをいかに活かすかということ。
The challenge and experience as a Fashion Model have strengthen my confidence to believe and pursue the dreams of my life.
幼かった当時を振り返ってみると、幾度かモデルになりたいと思った時期がありました。実際にオーディションを受けたこともあったけど、願いは叶わず。それもそのはず、16歳以上になってから来てねって言われたよ（笑）。
記憶の中で一番印象に残っているファッションへの憧れは、雑誌に掲載されていたブルーノマリの靴でした。瞬く間に恋に落ちたことを鮮明に覚えています。それから成長と共にどんな服を着ようか楽しみで、ジョルジオアルマーニやラルフローレンにインスパイヤされてきたけど、それらを自分のキャリアにしたいと考えることはありませんでした。周囲からはモデルになれるよ！と背中を押されることもあったけど、アメリカのオハイオ州にある小さな街スプリングフィールドで育った僕にとって、なかなか簡単に手が届く世界ではなかったんです。
Q4.Have you ever dreamed to become a Fashion Model when you were young ?
Once upon a time way back when, I did imagine being a model. I even went for an audition once. However, They didn’t want me because I was too young. They said that I had to be around 16 or 17 years old. I remember falling absolutely in love with this pair of Bruno Magli shoes I saw in a fashion magazine. I looked to Mr. Giorgio Armani and Mr Ralph Lauren for fashion nods. I never really considered fashion as a career. People would tell me all the time that I should model and such but it wasn’t something that came to fruition easily being from a small town, Ohio Springfield of America.

でも今はたくさんの方々に機会をもらって、ファッションモデルの仕事をすることができています。常に幸せに満ち溢れていて楽しいと思えることばかりではなかったけれど、この一年間でたくさんのことを学びました。
最初こそは素敵な衣装やセットに囲まれて興奮しましたが、思ったよりモデルの仕事ってハード。長時間に及ぶ撮影では寝る時間も食べる時間もままならないし、途中で体のあちこちが悲鳴をあげることばかり。だからそんな時は「美味しくてジューシーなビッグチーズバーガー」を想像するんだ。これが終わったら食べれるんだってね（笑）。
Q5.How have your life been going during this one year challenging as a Fashion Model ?
I have learned many things in this one year past. It wasn’t all happiness and fun. Sometimes we have to work very hard for very many hours. Sleep time was lost. Many a times, meals were missed. Leslie and me almost got stuck in a country because the manager at the airport check-in desk was being unprofessional and abusing his power. Potentially some people in other countries are even being homophobic. Models are usually so nice, friendly, happy and easy to work with. Most of the times are excited during shooting, the clothes and settings can be interesting and fun. At least at the beginning of the shoots. Sometimes at the end of the shoot before we call it a day, or run out of time, we can become so tired or sore from posing and all we can think about is a big juicy cheeseburger. The interviews and filming for TV appearance are always welcomed because I like being asked questions and hope that I can share something meaningful and entertaining. I hope these special experiences will stay with me through my life and remind me that dreams do come true even when you were least expecting. I just hope that Leslie and me can continue having fun doing what we both love. I think that’s what really matters and getting to share it with each other is such a blessing.

A special fashion editorial, photograpehd in Kyoto’s prestigous temple – Ryosokuin located at the historical Kenninjin. Joshua worked with Japanese popular actor/model HIKARU OTA for the September 2019 issue of VOGUE magazine.
この貴重な経験はこの先も忘れることはないし、何よりも実現できそうにない夢も願えば叶えることができることを知ったんだ。レスリーのおかげで近道はしたけれど、それもひとつのチャンスなのかもしれない。だから今は自分自身に磨きをかけてもっと憧られる存在になれるように頑張っています。
そして、自分の考えやアイデアを伝えることは好きなので、取材やテレビ出演の機会をいただくのもありがたく、観ている人に響くメッセージやワクワクする話を発信できれば嬉しいかなって。
これからもレスリーと2人、幸せを共有しあえる関係の素晴らしさと分野に関わらず自分らしさを届けていきたいと思っています。そして、夢のようなライフスタイルをリアルなものにしてしてくれた、全てのデザイナーさんやアーティスト、スタッフの皆さんに感謝の意を伝えたいです。
Q6.What message would you like to convey as a Fashion Model ?
I want to say thank you and show appreciation to the designers, artists and crews who make this fantasy lifestyle possible. I’m trying to think of what to say regarding the challenges of being a model vs being a teacher. Depending on classroom and students, I hope that my experiences within the modeling world will allow me to teach English in a way can be flashy and fun like some clothes but business and professional like others.

――人生における様々な出会いと文化の越境刺激から生まれる新しいアイデア・未来の選択。
Meeting and respecting people from different countries with different cultures have always been one of the greatest inspiration of my life.
僕は常に自分自身の存在と正直に向き合って来たつもりだよ。人生の価値観やモラル、自分を取り巻く環境を徐々に理解できてきたと思う。東京に来てから素敵な縁に溢れ尊敬できる人も多いし、自分も同じように尊敬される存在でありたいと願っている。他人を敬う日本の素晴らしい文化に学ぶことが多いんだ。
仕事におけるスタンスは、英語教師とファッションモデルは全く別のものだけど実は共通点もあると思っている。集中力やチームワークは当然ながら、歴史と受け継がれるべき専門性があって、芸術を感じる一方で科学的な要素も携わっている。その中でモデル業は遅めのデビューだったけれど、インスピレーションや知識は日々向上しているし、自分を表現できる世界としてすごく愛を持ってやっていて満喫できていることが嬉しい。

Q7.What similarities and differences have you experienced as an English Teacher as compared to being a Fashion Model ?
I think teaching and modeling are very different but share some similarities. There are different things to learn in each sphere. Some similarities include concentration and a team effort. Instead of being a teacher teaching a student, I become a model shot by a photographer. There is history to be learned and adhered in both professions. I have always believed in the Arts but I also find the Science to be incredibly beneficial and worthwhile.
Q8.What are the changes in your life working with people and learning the culture in fashion industry ?
I think I have stayed true to who I am as a person. My value of life, morals, and understanding of the world around me has only become clearer. I think my knowledge of fashionable designers has increased and some of the events attended has only increased interest and inspiration to model and enjoy the world of fashion.
I guess the only thing that has changed are my fashion options. Tokyo has so much more to offer than just fashion choices. Fashion is our world and we love it ! I have met lovely people since moving to Japan. When it comes down to it, I just try to treat everyone I meet with respect and hope to be treated the same in return. That is one of the best things about Japan, everyone respects one another.
2020年5月10日に婚約一周年を迎えた二人。今年7月に京都で神前式、12月にニューヨークで教会式で結婚式を挙げる予定だったが来年に延期
Joshua and Leslie celebrated the 1st anniversary of their engagement on 10 May 2020. Due to the Coronavirus crisis, they will postpone both of their 2 wedding ceremonies, initially scheduled to be held in Kyoto in July 2020, and New York in December 2020.
パートナーとしてレスリーを見た時、彼は仕事への姿勢が素晴らしくていつもアイデアに満ち溢れている。働き者だし毎日笑わせてくれるしね。そんなレスリーを僕の家族も大歓迎していて今年7月に京都で結婚式を挙げる予定だったけれど、残念ながら延期に。でも僕の家族もみんな式には来てくれる予定だからそれは楽しみにしているんだ。
いろんな苦境があるから、これから先の人生はどうなるか分からないけれど、僕自身はまず30キロ痩せて（笑）、世界平和を促進したり様々なチャリティ活動に参加したいかな。レスリーとは…5年後はマイホームを建てて、できるだけたくさん二人で旅行して同じ景色を見て…。10年後はもしかしたらアメリカに戻っているかも？ 20年後は、宝くじを当てて、豪邸に可愛いプールボーイとナースと暮らしていたりしてね。でも確実に言えるのはLGBTコミュニティに貢献していることかな。

Q9.Living and pursuing your dreams in Japan, what have you inspired and shared with your familiy and friends ?
One of my good friends is a teacher and she would love to teach in another country. I think I have inspired her to look into pursing such a dream. So far two family members have come over to Japan to work with me and Leslie on a shoot. One of my dreams is coming true in that moving so far away would make my family want to come visit. We were on a roll with plans for my mother and three other girl friends to come in July this year for our now postponed wedding due to COVID-19. I hope to keep inspiring my family and friends to travel and live their best lives. Leslie inspires so many people myself included. I just love living and working with him. He makes me laugh every day. He has great ideas and works so hard to make our dreams come true.
Q10.What is the future goal for yourself, and the future plan with Leslie Kee as a family ?
Haha. I want to lose 30 pounds, promote World Peace, and participate in Charities to help people. Plans for me and Leslie in the next 5 years include traveling as much as possible before planning to build or buy a home. 10 years from now I think we will be potentially looking to move back to America. I would like to build a home there. 20 years is tough to say, will we be retired, or will I win the lottery? Will we have a sexy pool boy and a total babe nurse to take care of us ? This is a Yes ! Will we continue doing LGBT community involvement things? I think so.

Q11.How do you feel about the communications and inspirations you have influenced the world through SNS ?
I don’t do SNS for the likes or comments. I do SNS to stay in touch with family and friends. It’s such an amazing thing to be able to meet people from all over the world or stay in touch with the new inspiring and interesting friends we met via SNS. It’s truly amazing the availability of connection and information has enhanced the world for more possible communication.
Leslie is documenting our Love with our daily life and traveling photos and I think that’s what matters most on our Instagram accounts. I understand the photos in our Instagram and the documentary interviews in Youtube are popularly being supported and inspiring many people especially the young LGBT community. We are very grateful and I think that’s great and powerful. I think living in this generation, it’s doing a great service to helping the community by ways of polarization.
Q12.How would you and Leslie Kee, as a couple, inspire and influence the LGBT community ?
Me and Leslie always believe the importance of people treating one another with Respect and Love. We hope that everyone stays true to who they are and lives a happy and enjoyable life. Life is short, treasure it. Just stay positive and believe in your dreams. Eventually the dreams will come true if you believe and strive hard for it.. It’s an amazing experience but for LGBTQ, we have to also make sure the important paperwork is taken care of as well. We need the right laws to protect LGBTQ community as equal as everyone.
