Tokyo stocks rise in morning on U.S. economic recovery hope

Tokyo shares advanced Tuesday morning with investors taking heart from data overnight suggesting the U.S. economy is on course for a recovery from lockdowns, despite concerns about mass protests in the country over the death of a black man in police custody.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 185.66 points, or 0.84 percent, from Monday to 22,248.05. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 14.86 points, or 0.95 percent, at 1,583.61.

Major gainers included mining, real estate and machinery issues.
