Twitter has experienced a major increase in usage and mobile app downloads since the protests broke out over the murder of George Floyd last week, according to TechCrunch.
While news sites and channels are reasonable resources for getting updates on the Black Lives Matter movement and the respective protests rippling across the US, social media platforms are far faster at delivering information on what's happening in the world in real time -- and instead of select material being provided by companies or big media, it's being shared by the public.
For this reason, Twitter has seen a significant increase in downloads over the past week as people look towards the social media platform to share unfiltered news and information about the demonstrations and the movement, in general. In fact, according to the app store intelligence firms Apptopia and Sensor Tower, Twitter recently had its biggest week in history.
Though each firm recorded it happening on different days of this week, both state that the count of daily installs earlier this week were record setting high. By Wednesday, "Twitter topped its record for installs," and even the number of daily active users has been far higher than average.
It's clear that Twitter is a highly popular resource for getting the latest information on social and political events like the Black Lives Matter movement; however, it's also important to note that while a great deal of the content uploaded to the platform is unfiltered, it is by no means unbiased.
