$50 Fine Introduced For Not Wearing Mask In Miami Beach

Miami (efe-epa).- Miami tightened the fines for restaurants that do not comply with COVID-19 rules, while Miami Beach will fine $50 dollars to those who do not wear masks in public places.

The explosion of cases in Florida, which is close to 147,000, and the refusal of Governor Ron DeSantis to make the use of the mask mandatory, prompted local authorities to strengthen measures against the spread of the pandemic.

Miami Mayor Francis Suárez decreed an emergency measure that establishes the first violation of the rules on distance and use of masks for 10 days, the second for 15 days and the third for 30 days.

"Businesses will now face stricter penalties for those who violate COVID-19 guidelines," Suarez said.

Miami-Dade County, with the highest number of cases of the new coronavirus in Florida, with 35,222 of the 146,361 confirmed in the state to date, is slowing down in the economic reopening decreed by DeSantis.

In addition, the city of Miami Beach, which also belongs to Miami-Dade County, will fine up to $ 50, for those who do not wear masks in public places where it is not possible to distance themselves from others.

Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber said it is not a political statement but that each person do their part in this pandemic.

"Our rule is simple, you should wear a mask in our city, on the street, waiting outside a restaurant, in the lobby of your condo or in the park," Gelber emphasized.
