Baseball fans got some exciting news Monday afternoon, as Major League Baseball unveiled its 2020 season schedule. Opening night will take place on July 23 with the New York Yankees visiting the defending World Series champion Washington Nationals, as well as the San Francisco Giants taking on their rival and World Series favorite Los Angeles Dodgers.
The rest of the league’s teams will play on July 24, with the games going as follows:
- Atlanta Braves at New York Mets
- Detroit Tigers at Cincinnati Reds
- Toronto Blue Jays at Tampa Bay Rays
- Miami Marlins at Philadelphia Phillies
- Milwaukee Brewers at Chicago Cubs
- Kansas City Royals at Cleveland Indians
- Baltimore Orioles at Boston Red Sox
- Colorado Rockies at Texas Rangers
- Minnesota Twins at Chicago White Sox
- Pittsburgh Pirates at St. Louis Cardinals
- Seattle Mariners at Houston Astros
- Arizona Diamondbacks at San Diego Padres
- San Francisco Giants at Los Angeles Dodgers
- Los Angeles Angels at Oakland Athletics
- The Yankees and Nationals will have an off day on July 24.
Teams this season will play 40 games against teams in their own division. The remaining 20 games will be against teams in their division in the opposing league. For example, AL East teams will play NL East teams.
The Miami Marlins have the toughest schedule here in 2020 based on the average winning percentage of their opponents this season from 2019, while the Minnesota Twins have the easiest schedule this season.
One of the biggest concerns regarding the MLB season is the imbalance of rivalry games. The Yankees and Red Sox will play ten games this season, seven of which will be played in New York. This is something that is a common thread for a lot of matchups in 2020, and will be interesting as to how teams will handle that.
