Conservative Federalist Society Founder Steven Calabresi Calls For 2nd Impeachment Of Trump

Steven Calabresi, the co-founder of the Federalist Society, called for the removal of President Donald Trump over his tweet suggesting that the election be delayed.

Delaying the election would be an unprecedented act. No president, Democrat or Republican, has ever done so, not even during wars and economic depressions.

“Until recently, I had taken as political hyperbole the Democrats’ assertion that President Trump is fascist,” Calabresi wrote in an op-ed to the New York Times that was published Thursday. “But this latest tweet is fascistic and is itself ground for the president’s immediate impeachment again by the House of Representatives and his removal from office by the Senate.”

The Federalist Society is an influential and nationwide organization of conservative and libertarian lawyers. According to its website, the society is “founded on the principles that the state exists to preserve freedom, that the separation of governmental powers is central to our Constitution, and that it is emphatically the province and duty of the judiciary to say what the law is, not what it should be.”

Calabresi stated that he has “voted Republican in every presidential election since 1980” and previously “wrote an op-ed opposing President Trump’s impeachment.” He is also a professor at Northwestern University’s Pritzker School of Law. He cited that it is “up to each of the 50 states whether to allow universal mail-in voting” and that “Article II of the Constitution explicitly gives the states total power over the selection of presidential electors.”

Calebresi continued on to explain the history of Election Day and cited more laws to prove why canceling the fall election would be unconstitutional and illegal.

“President Trump needs to told by every Republican in Congress that he cannot postpone the federal election,” he wrote. “Anyone who says otherwise should never be elected to Congress again.”
