Kanye West, who announced his bid for the presidency a little over a month ago, has been pooling poorly with both the black population and the general electorate with just 2% of the vote in both categories, according to a Politico/Morning Consult poll.
The poll shows that West has not made a significant improvement since last month, when he was also at 2% in the polls.
The legitimacy of West’s presidential campaign has been called into question several times. In particular, there has been speculation that West is only running for presidency to help President Donald Trump become re-elected. West has been previously supportive of Trump, but he actively derides Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee. In an interview with Forbes, West stated the following:
“I’m not saying Trump’s in my way, he may be a part of my way. And Joe Biden? Like come on man, please. You know? Obama’s special. Trump’s special. We say Kanye West is special. America needs special people that lead. Bill Clinton? Special. Joe Biden’s not special.”
West has been seen with Trump supporters, including Lane Ruhland, one of Trump’s attorneys, and Jared Kushner, Trump’s adviser and son-in-law.
West also stated in the same interview that he is trying to gather the black vote. “To say that the black vote is Democratic is a form of racism and white supremacy,” he wrote.
He also stated, “A lot of times just like political parties they feel all blacks have to be Democrat. This man, Joe Biden, said if you don’t vote for me, then you are not black. Well, act like we didn’t hear that? We act like we didn’t hear that man say that?”
West was referencing the controversy when Biden said that anybody who voted for Trump “ain’t black,” a statement that he later walked back after significant backlash.
Biden has recently announced his running mate, Sen. Kamala Harris (D-California), the first black woman and first Asian to run on a national major-party ticket.
