Education Secretary Betsy DeVos remains socially distanced in her sprawling 22,000-square-foot waterfront estate on Lake Macatawa, Michigan, which boasts an around-the-clock U.S. Marshals’ security squad that is paid for by taxpayers. This comes after she has ordered public schools to reopen for in person learning this fall.
DeVos began receiving the extra tax-funded security measures shortly after she was confirmed to her Education Secretary post. The security, alone, has cost taxpayers at least $25 million, NBC News reported.
DeVos is the nation’s lead education official as school administrators deal with one of the most significant crises facing the country, which is how to either safely bring 51 million American students back into classrooms or administer remote learning in a pandemic.
