Week 1 Preview: New York Jets vs Buffalo Bills

In a changing AFC East, both the Jets and Bills will look to take advantage of the massive changes. Buffalo made the playoffs last season while the Jets went on a hot streak towards the end of the year. The Bills have gone all-in on seeing if Josh Allen is their quarterback of the future by bringing in Stefon Diggs. The Jets have finally gotten the idea to start building around Sam Darnold, but the question is if they did enough. This should be a low-scoring battle between two of the top-half defenses in the league.

New York Jets

The Jets have a defense that is solid behind Gregg Williams as the coordinator. Their secondary is very underrated but could have some issues covering both Stefon Diggs and John Brown. With Avery Williamson returning this year from injury, New York has a great linebacker tandem with him and Blake Cashman who should take a massive step forward with CJ Mosley opting out. It all will come down to how Darnold performs behind an offensive line that has a lot of moving pieces. He will be throwing to a trio of receivers that includes Jamison Crowder, Denzel Mims, and Breshad Perriman. Le’Veon Bell needs to perform better than he did last year but will have tough sledding this week.

Buffalo Bills

The Bills are perhaps the most complete team in the AFC East this year. The duo of Devin Singletary and Zack Moss should help Allen this year, but like Bell, both could have tough sledding against New York’s elite run defense. Buffalo’s offensive line should be able to give Allen enough time in the pocket against the Jets’ lackluster pass rush. The Bills secondary should give Darnold fits all game long.

Betting Odds

Point Spread: NYJ: +6.5 (-110) | BUF: -6.5 (-110)

Moneyline: NYJ: +225 | BUF: -286

Over/Under: 39.5

I would not bet against the spread this week as this divisional game will likely be close. Both defenses are great so this should be a close, low-scoring game. I would take the under in this game.

Prediction

The Bills have the better team this year than the Jets and it’s not close. Buffalo should be able to take advantage of Darnold’s inconsistencies this week and earn a tight win.

*inal Score: Jets 14, Bills 20*
